I’m Not Set Out to Change the World

This semester, one of my favorite professors told my class that it is naive for us to think that we can change the world. I thought to myself that he was so wrong. How dare he tell me that I can’t change the world!? I believe that the power of Love is the key to eradicating all the negativity in this world. Almost immediately I felt offended. In that same moment of feeling offended, I automatically recognize that two things were happening. First, I was choosing to feel offended, secondly, I instantaneously recognized my ego was in play. I felt that it was my ego talking. It was my ego that wanted to defend how I felt about changing the world. In him saying that it was naive for us to think we can change the world, I felt as though it was him talking to me directly and saying that I couldn’t change the world. Then, a little voice inside spoke to me and I had to pause because now I felt that in someway he was right.

I went home that night thinking that my professor couldn’t be totally right. There are hundreds of thousands of people (hopefully) doing things every day that is changing the world. I can be just like them. It may be a great task to do it on my own, but it can be done. As I thought about this deeper, I realized that no one saves the world on their own. They must have help. While it may not be help in the form of just physical labor, but in doing things to change the world or make it a better place, that is in fact an inspiration for other people to do the same thing.

I am not going to set out to change the world.  The thought of that alone, is quite frightening, so I am starting smaller. I am setting out to change myself. In changing myself and being who I truly want to be and destined to be, I know, more than believing, that I am inspiring other people to be the best that they can be. I want to inspire you. I want you to feel as though you’re unstoppable. I want you to know that you are love. I want you to feel like you are love. I want you to see other people the same way that I see you. Gandhi said that we should be the change we wish to see in the world. I take that very seriously, because I know that the one thing that I can change, is me. Changing me means that I have to be a walking inspiration. I want to run into you on the street, at the coffee shop, in  the library, at the gas station, wherever, and inspire you. Whether its through the small act of greeting you with a smile, opening a door for you, buying you a meal, or sharing my experiences. I want you to pay it forward and be a positive inspiration to every person you meet.

I alone, can not change the world. It would take an army of people to change this world. If I want to see change in this world, I know that I have to be that change. What does that mean and how do I do that? Well…

If I want people to greet me with a smile…I should do the exact same thing.

If I want people to do everything with love…I should do the exact same thing.

If I want people to recognize the good in every experience…I should do the exact same thing.

If I want people to have Faith in themselves, and in the power of this great Universe…I should do the exact same thing.

My purpose on this earth is to serve. To give back in a way that is healing towards every soul on this planet. In serving, I want to live, love and be present in every moment and appreciate the beauty of this world. My hope is that you can join me in this army of people set out to make this a better place. While I am not set out to change this world, there is a small part of me that hopes that I can bring about great change to this planet. Please join me by being the change you wish to see in the world.

What change do you wish to see in this world? How are you going to take part in that change?

Namaste,

Di
